There are a lot of sleeping pads on the market, from light weight backpacking to full on inflatable mattresses. Each sleeping pad has a list of pro’s and con’s. We were interested in taking a look at a semi-portable sleeping pad that doesn’t suffer from the issues of large air mattress punctures and weight. Also, didn’t require a pump to inflate.

Inflating
Inflating the LL Bean double sleeping pad is fairly easy, we liked to unroll it, open the valves and toss it in the tent while we get the rest of camp set up. The pad does a great job of self inflating over a few minutes. We then close one valve and like to blow a little extra air into the pad.
Comfort
Sleeping on the double pad by yourself is a dream. It turns camping into glamping. It evenly distributes weight, is extremely stable and provides great insulation. We were unable to identify the R value of the pad, but would guess it’s around 6. Sleeping with another person on the pad works well. It’s large enough to hold two standard size sleeping bags. Movement from your sleeping partner isn’t transferred too much, but you can feel some shifting when they move or get up off the sleeping pad.
Weight
You won’t be backpacking with this double wide sleeping pad. It weighs in at 10.35 lbs. It’s pretty big, but a lot smaller than having to cram two foam rolls into a car for a weekend of camping.
Packing
The pack size of the air mattress is as shown about 33 inches long and the diameter of the girth is about 14 inches. It’s straight forward to deflat, fold in half roll up and stuff in the bag. The double valve design is really nice when emptying out the air, it takes much less time to deflate.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, a lot of sleeping pads are really good products, and the L.L. Bean double sleeping pad is no exception. It comes with a patch kit, it provides insulation and is a million times better than sleeping on the ground. You can still feel large rocks and roots through the pad, so pick your location in a flat smooth area. We had dogs and cats on the pad and didn’t see any damage or holes caused by them. For a quality build, double wide sleeping pad that offers great value we would recommend the L.L. Bean double sleeping pad.
